CUWRFC Defeats Rutgers 45-27

On Saturday, March 9th, CUWRFC took on Rutgers Women’s Rugby and after a hard match with strong play from both sides, the Columbia women came out on top with a final score of 45-27. Rutgers started off strong, scoring two quick tries in the first few minutes of the game to put the score at 14-0 Rutgers. However, CU came back with tries by Peterson (CC ’13) and Cerullo (CC ’13) to tie the score 14-14. CU maintained their momentum going into the half with a try by Leng-Smith (CC ’15), putting CU in the lead 21-14. CUWRFC continued their strong play in the second half, with solid scrumming and loose play from the forwards. Ullman (CC’15), Cerullo and Peterson all scored tries in the second half, while Rutgers countered with two tries of their own and a 3-point conversion from a penalty inside 10m. In a tough, physical match, CUWRFC played together as a team to defeat Rutgers 45-27 in a solid start to their spring season.

From December 10th to 22nd, CUWRFC and CURFC are organizing a joint campus-wide book drive. Books and textbooks of any kind are accepted, in new or used condition. All donations will be given to The Housing Works Bookstore Cafe.

Tough Loss to Cornell, 41-29

After 80 minutes of heart-stopping rugby, Saturday night’s game ended with a win for Cornell. Cerullo (CC ’13) started the game off with a beautiful try. Columbia and Big Red went back and forth for the first half, with one try by Ullman (CC ’15) and another by Cerullo resulting in a tied score of 17-17 at the half. Cornell came back strong in the second half, running all over CU defense and scoring three tries in the first twenty minutes. CUWRFC rallied and fought 15 as 1, leading to two beautiful tries by Peterson (CC ’13) and Cerullo in less than two minutes. It wasn’t enough to stop Big Red, who managed to slip past Columbia’s defenses once more on the last play of the game. Despite the scoreboard at the end of the game, CU played 80 minutes of brilliant rugby. The team’s hard work all season culminated in one of the best games ever played by CUWRFC – every single player on the team has much to be proud of.

Joining CUWRFC is easy – there are no try outs or criteria except for being a student at CU. All you have to do is show up to one of our practice sessions. Fall 2011 practices are Mondays from 7:30-9:30pm and Thursdays from 7:30 -9:30pm; meet us at 117th and Amsterdam at 6:30pm on Thursdays to take a free shuttle to Baker at 218th Street and Broadway. If you’re interested, contact one of our officers here, check out our Facebook page, or just come to practice! All you need are sneakers or cleats, water, and a metrocard.

Loss to Yale, 36-17

CUWRFC suffered a tough loss to Yale with a final score of 36-17. Despite solid defensive play and several beautiful runs from the back line, Yale managed to slip around Columbia defenses and land the ball in the try zone. CUWRFC played a phenomenal last 10 minutes of the game, running phase after phase just yards away from Yale’s try line. Woods eventually scored off a punch, ending the match on a good note for Columbia.

Columbia defeats Penn 21-17

CUWRFC left the pitch victorious on Sunday after 80 minutes of gut-wrenching rugby. Penn proved to be a tough match, playing quickly and aggressively in the rucks and making several impressive runs. The score went back and forth throughout the game, but a last-minute try by Naomi Sharp (CC ’15) left Columbia with the win. Columbia developed a strong offense, running many successful punches and executing beautiful plays in the back line. Two tries and three conversions by flyhalf Isadora Cerullo (CC ’13) secured the victory for CUWRFC.

CUWRFC falls to Dartmouth

CUWRFC has much to be proud of after taking on Dartmouth – although the score read 69-0, the team proved to be aggressive in the rucks and executed good phase play. With a considerable number of rookies starting on the pitch, and several players starting at new positions (including Isadora Cerullo (CC ’13) at flyhalf and Melissa Peterson (CC ’13) at scrumhalf), Columbia did an excellent job at adjusting to the lineup. However, Dartmouth’s back line managed to make several strong scoring runs. CUWRFC never lost heart, and played fifteen as one down to the 80th minute.

CUWRFC Alum Selected for USA Women’s Rugby Team

Congratulations to CUWRFC alumna Rebecca Brafman, who has been selected for the USA Rugby Women’s National team! The team will be traveling to Italy and France November 13-25 where they will compete in one match against Italy and two against France. The last game will be in Stade de France as the curtain raiser to the France-Samoa men’s game. Congrats, Braf!
